On the 23-24th of June, 2021, SCIF Congress implemented a new large-scale project – the International Online Symposium SCIF dedicated to one of the most pressing topics of our time – environmental aspects as an integral part of chemical enterprises functioning.
The program of the event included presentations by a representative of the United Nations Environment Programme and leading technology licensors, as well as discussions regarding sustainable development of the chemical industry.
More than 200 delegates from 70 manufacturing enterprises of Azerbaijan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, India, Spain, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Oman, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Croatia and Czech Republic joined the two-day International Online Symposium as active participants of discussions. Moreover, over 300 viewers of the live broadcast had an opportunity to get acquainted with the presentations in Russian and English languages on the most important aspects of industrial ecology at chemical plants and ask questions to the Speakers.
For the productive participation of delegates in the Online Symposium highly qualified specialists were involved for providing simultaneous interpreting.
The Symposium was opened by a specially invited environmental expert – Chief of Chemicals and Health Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme, Monika MacDevette. Monika presented information with statistical data and forecasts of the impact of the production of chemicals on the biosphere. Besides, the participants of the Online Symposium were introduced to the action plan of the United Nations and its committees in the field of emissions abatement and development of sustainable methods of mineral fertilizers and pesticides production.
On the first day of the event’s program Stanislav Kliuev, Chief Specialist of Sales Department of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions, presented EnviNOx® technology for removing N2O and NOX which is used to reduce emissions into the environment. The relevance of the implementation of this development has caused a lively discussion on the reduction of N2O and NOX emissions.
The approach to tackling emissions control issues was outlined in the presentation dedicated to catalyst emission control solutions of Clariant.
Elisa Puci, Process Engineer at Stamicarbon B.V. (the Netherlands) shared company’s experience of implementing the innovative MicroMist Venturi scrubber to reduce dust pollution at chemical industry enterprises, presenting a detailed process flow diagram.
The topic of the event aroused great interest of the world audience, that is why the specialists of Holland Novochem and IGS were given an opportunity to present information materials and their solutions on the first day of the Symposium.
At the end of the first day of the event, the presentation on the development of green ammonia production was made by the Australian consultant, a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Venkat Pattabathula. The speaker reviewed in details the approaches of the leading companies in the industry in this field and presented solutions for modernization of traditional chemical production plants.
The second day of the Online Symposium was opened with a speech by Maxim Valkovsky, Director for Cooperation and Partnerships of Haldor Topsoe in Russia and the CIS countries. The specialist highlighted the latest technological solutions of the company to reduce the carbon footprint, and, as a result, to run more environmentally friendly production of mineral fertilizers, which caused a fruitful discussion on this topic.
Participants of the event also learned about KBR green and blue solutions for ammonia plant revamps for cleaner production and lower CO2 production.
A separate block of the program was devoted to searching for ways to monitor and reduce atmospheric emissions during the production of nitric acid. Johnson Matthey and SICK AG presented the prospects for work in this direction, as well as their own developments to reduce the damage to the environment.
At the end of the second day of the Online Symposium, Giorgi Kobaladze, Programme Advisor at Nitric Acid Climate Action Group (NACAG), made an extended presentation on the issues of reducing N2O emissions in the context of environmentally friendly production of nitric acid and fertilizers. Apart from the theoretical part, the speaker shared the experience of implementation and support of these technical capabilities at operating chemical plants, taking Rustavi Azot JSC as an example and involving the company’s specialists.
